French Drain Solutions: Effective Runoff Management in Shellharbour

Addressing Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour

In Shellharbour, a homeowner encountered a troubling and worsening issue with water ingress. Rainwater from adjacent properties, positioned at a higher elevation, began to flow into the garden and seep beneath the foundation of the house. This unwanted intrusion caused damage to the flooring, promoted rising damp, and resulted in mould growth inside the property, jeopardising the integrity of recent renovations.

What Methods Can Help You Determine the Source of Water Ingress?

The issue originated from both surface runoff and subsurface water flowing downhill from the rear and side yards of neighbouring properties. Without a reliable drainage system to intercept this water, it naturally flowed beneath the house.

Developing an Effective Drainage Strategy

CS Plumbing crafted and installed a gravity-fed French drain system designed specifically to collect and redirect water before it reached the foundation of the home.

The project comprised several key components:

  • A carefully designed French drain system to capture both surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, directing it through gravity to a concrete pit.
  • A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, featuring strategically placed holes in the curb for efficient water discharge.
  • Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes replacing the original smaller pipes, connected to new 100mm PVC piping leading to the curb.
  • A retaining wall system constructed along the boundary using concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled with an excavator to create a robust barrier to hold back the adjacent yard.
  • Efficient soil removal conducted on-site, utilising a dumper for effective site management.

Which Strategies Can Ensure Effective Water Management?

The newly installed drainage system now successfully captures both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring it is diverted away from the home. This solution offers the homeowner a durable and low-maintenance option that protects their foundation, flooring, and the investment made in renovations.
