RESOLVING COMMON INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES
CRUCIAL INSTALLATION DISCLAIMER
Installation of baby gates requires a certain level of proficiency; attempting this task without the assistance of a qualified professional may lead to potential hazards and unexpected expenses.
By reading this article, you acknowledge that you have reviewed and agreed to the terms and conditions specified here: Website Terms & Conditions.
The following examples highlight various obstacles I have encountered during installations, which may resonate with your own experiences and offer practical solutions.
INSTALLATION OBSTACLE 1: UNEVEN SURFACES
ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE OF UNEVEN SURFACES

-
- Measure the widest point at the top to determine the required size for the gate and any extensions needed. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
- Once you have the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder fitted with a metal/aluminium disc to accurately cut the gate, adhering to the measurements indicated in the reference images above.
- Remove the plastic component from the section you plan to eliminate and insert it into the cut part of the gate to ensure the tension knob fits correctly.
- This process will become clearer once you have the gate on hand.
INSTALLATION OBSTACLE 2: MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL
ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE OF MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL

-
- Ensure that the gate/extensions are prepared for installation.
- Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps, ensuring a level surface on the wall.
- Allow the Putty to cure completely BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely affix the gate using pressure.
- Do not rely on the gate for safety until all procedures are completed and the gate has been tested for stability.
INSTALLATION OBSTACLE 3: INSTALLING BABY GATES OUTDOORS
ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE OF OUTDOOR INSTALLATION OF BABY GATES
While installing baby gates outdoors can be a quick and cost-effective solution, it may also void the warranty on these gates.

I recommend considering outdoor installations of baby gates only as a temporary and economical option. This may risk voiding your warranty on the gates.
-
- Baby gates are specifically designed for indoor use and are not suitable for outdoor conditions due to potential exposure to harsh weather.
- This limitation is clearly stated in the warranty documentation that accompanies the product.
- Failure to comply with warranty conditions will lead to the loss of warranty coverage.
For a long-lasting solution, consider employing a contractor who specialises in security or latch gates. Although this may involve higher costs, it is the most effective approach.
PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:
Disclaimer: None of these measures guarantee complete rust protection; however, they aim to prolong the lifespan of the gate in South African weather conditions.
Regular maintenance every 1-2 months can significantly mitigate the risk of rust.
To minimise rust and moisture accumulation, adhere to these guidelines:
-
- Before installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover all surface areas, including the base.
- Drill drainage holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This will allow water to escape and prevent rust from forming inside the hollow gate, where moisture may accumulate at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes will provide ventilation to avert moisture build-up.
- Apply a light coat of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow to dry completely (approximately 2 hours) before applying a second coat.
For existing rust:
-
- Apply Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g to the affected areas, following the product guidelines.
- Refer to the product description on takealot.com; you may need to obtain mineral spirits to clean any overspray from non-rusted areas.
- The rust reformer will convert rust to a black colour, which should then be coated with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
